There are different types of microscopes. Most parasites can be detected with an amplification of 40x. Some smaller protozoa such as Costia, are optimally visible with an amplification of 100x. Moving parasites are more easily discernable because they swim independent of the direction of the water. 400-1000x is necessary for Bacteriological identification.
